Writing has become something that is very important. Everyone writes something while going through his or her day. It may be to remind them of something that they need to do or to communicate to someone else. The way someone writes can control what the meaning and definition is. Writing is involved in every aspect of life including someone’s personal, academic, professional, and civic life.
After a long day of work most people really do not feel like going out and doing stuff. They like to just sit in the comfort of there own home. To keep up with people they use social media. Social media is really for friends. The idea behind it is for someone to be able to keep up with friends that you may not get to see because they have moved to a different area. When someone is talking to his or her friend through the messenger on the social media site they can talk about anything such as school, work, or even catch up. There are many types of social media sites that you can join such as Facebook, Instagram, and Myspace. They are easy to join all someone has to do is go to the website, fill in there information and accept the user agreement which are the rules.
When someone is at school it is expected of them to write. Attending UTEP is not just for people who have just graduated from high school it is also for teachers as well. The reason these people go to UTEP is to get a degree so that they may have a better life once they graduate with a better job. While going to UTEP everyone will have to take basic classes such as English, Math, Science, and History. In many of those classes the students will be required to write a research paper or essays over what they have learned. Many students will also be required to take that paper that they wrote and transform it into a presentation for the class. In order to do well on these papers the students will have to follow very specific rules that were put on place in the syllabus as well as the student handbook. In order to become a student at UTEP someone must apply and register for classes.
While at work many people are required to work as well. In the MLG (Major League Gaming) their goal is to entertain. The only way that they can entertain is by putting in ESPORT rules that every player must follow. For each type of game such as sports and FPS (First Person Shooter) there are special rules that are set in place. These written rules go even deeper when you go into different game types. In order for someone to join the MLG all you have to do is sign up at MLG.com and get drafted by a team or set up your own team.
Civic communities also require writing. There are many people out there that volunteer there free time to help those who are in need. There are many ways that someone can find out about volunteer opportunities, some of the ways that someone can find out is by the commercials that a company will have put on either a TV or radio channel asking for volunteers, or by flyers that are hanging up around town. There are also many ways that someone would be able to volunteer without signing up such as donating blood or giving a donation. In order to donate blood someone would have to meet certain help requirements to keep not just the person donating but also the people who will be getting the blood as safe as possible. Someone could also go to certain places such as a food bank or a homeless shelter and pass out food just to help these people. To become a volunteer all someone has to do is just give up a little bit of his or her time.
Everyone uses writing for something in his or her everyday life. People may not notice it but it is there. It goes from the smallest of things such as taking an order at McDonalds all the way to the President signing a new law.
Rhetorical Analysis Rhetorical Analysis of Understanding the Impact of Deployments of Children
Joseph C. Lawson

In today’s conflicts around the world, many families are being split in half. Children often have to say goodbye to one of their parents who are heading off to war. These children have to live with the fact that they may never see their parent again. In the research report Understanding the Impact of deployments on Children and Family, Chandra, Burns, et al., went to a camp that was made just for children that have parents deployed, to research how the children are affected. In their research, the authors found that the children of a deployed parent become more independent than children of the same age whose parent did not deploy.
Ethos deals with the credibility of the authors and how serious readers should look at their research and their work. The authors of this research paper have been in the research field for many years. All of the authors have at least a Doctor of Psychology degree. With this degree they are given permission to conducting counseling and therapy. Some of the authors also have a Doctor of Philosophy degree, which deals with the research aspect of the Psychology field. All of these degrees would count very little for ethos unless the authors also had practical applications. Behind all of the authors they have countless years of practice. The authors have been dealing with military children and families, so when it comes to their credibility behind their research, they have more then some other researchers. Along with the author’s degrees and experience, another thing that gives them credibility is where they work. The authors of this paper of this research paper work for a renowned research center: the Center for Military Mental Health Policy Research. In order for someone to be offered a job within this research center, one must have great reviews from their former and present patients along with conducting great research. Some of these authors have also conducted other research experiments and written up reports, which are being used today not just in the United States but also by other countries that are dealing with some of the same issues such as PTSD. Both Terri Tanielian and Lisa Jaycox have both worked on two research papers that are being used worldwide to help treat military service members when they get back from a deployment.
Logos deals with how the information is presented to the reader and the people that are involved in this study. In the research paper the authors present the information as a longitudinal study. A longitudinal study is a study that is repeated over time. For this study the researchers gave every participant of the camp a baseline study, asking about: how the participant feels, how excited the participant is about going to the camp, what are the participant’s expectations for the camp, and why they are at this camp. Once the authors got all of the answers back for both of the surveys they were able to see that most of the kids attending were sad, but proud at the same time. The main way that these authors presented their findings was in graphs. For each question that the authors asked every child that compiled up all of their data and graphed it to show the percentage for each question.
According to this study there are many issues that come from a child that has a parent that is deployed to a combat zone. Some of the findings were: the child felt proud, they felt like they had more responsibility, felt lonely, and they got upset or agitated more easily. The biggest finding was that 81% of the children that they surveyed felt more independent. From this number they are trying to tell other people that while a child of a deployed service member is more likely to feel lonely, feel proud, and get more upset or agitated, they also grow up faster and act more responsible. They propose these findings in writings from the camp participants as well as from the parents of those children. They also use the charts and graphs to support their findings.
There are many visuals that go along with this paper, but the graphs all support what the authors are reporting on. They took the word-formatted version and made it easier to understand and take in the research. These graphs all support ethos. The graphs all support what the authors are saying and it supports their credibility. If these graphs were not given then some people would doubt the findings due to the fact that surveys are usually given with a graph. Logs fits in here as well. Having a graph is part of how the authors present the information to the readers. The graph is one way of presenting the information. The first visual goes over the demographic of the survey. It lists everything from their age to the gender and which branch their parent is. The second visual goes over the first survey that they gave the children with their answers and how they feel. The other visuals go over the many items such as: what the parents felt, why the child was sent to the camp, what the child expected from the camp, and how their experience was at the camp. The most important visual would be how they will handle the rest of this deployment as well as future deployments. All of the visuals fall together to tell the story of how children feel and how they get trough the deployments of their parents.
Overall this research paper is full of results that the researches came up some very interesting outcomes. They show that there are not just negative effects of deployments but also so positive effects that some people never would have seen or thought of. The way that they presented the information made it sound educational but easy to understand as well. The communication that they presented was done well. The way that they could have improved is by conducting more research and comparing years to each other to make their prove more concrete.

Thesis: There are many programs out there that are made to help children get through a deployment.
Annotation: While a student goes to school, if they live on or near a military base, there are a lot of programs that are made and put into place to help a child get through a deployment as easy as possible. Some of these programs are sports or even after school social programs. The issue is that many of these children are not put into these programs because of their locations. Most of these programs are only on or near a military base, and for the families of those who are in the Reserves or National Guard, most their families are not able to get access to these programs due to not being near an active military base.
Question: Question 3
Point of view: To this author there are plenty of programs that the government has made and put into place but they have a major flaw, these programs are only available to those whose parents are on active duty, or those who live near a military base.

Thesis: Service members children reported that they had more suffered from emotional difficulties.
Annotation: Children who have or had parents in the military have all gone through some had times in their life. Most of the children in the research thought that the hardest time for them was during a deployment. While their parent is gone the children have to grow up fast so that they can learn how to survive on their own so when their other parent is too stressed out or worried then they can take care of themselves.
Question: Question 1.
Point of view: While a parent is deployed most children have to learn how to survive on their own. This means that the children have to grow up and do it fast.
Thesis: Over a few months children grow up a lot, but over a year children grow up even more. When a parent is gone for a year the effects are more sever on children.
Annotation: When a soldier is deployed the deployment effects not just the soldier but also the family of the soldier. The younger a child is the more damaging and devastating of an effect that can be left on the child. Some of the issues come from having to take on more responsibilities that the child may not be ready to handle, as well as becoming more attached to the parent that was not deployed. Other then negative effects there are positive ones such as: gaining maturity, personal growth, and more opportunities.
Question: Question 1.
Point of view: The author of this article is showing that while a parent is gone their children goes through a lot but they also grow up a lot and there are events that the parents miss and it affects the children.
Thesis: A parent’s career in the military hurts the children of the service member over time, and it becomes more damaging when deployments are involved.
Annotation: Half of all military service members in the UK military believe that the career that they has chosen have a negative effect on their children. The children are more likely to say that they have had a negative affect if their parent had a disorder after coming back from a deployment. Active service members also have a higher rate of the children being affected negatively than those of the reserves.
Question: Question 1.
Point of View: A child is more likely to have a negative experience if his or her parent serves full time over someone who serves part time.
Thesis: With multiple deployments, children of military members are more likely to drink and abuse drugs.
Annotation: Children who have a parent in the military are likely to drink or use other types of substances to get over their depression more than someone who does not have a parent in the military. The children felt like the drugs or alcohol were the only way that they were able to get over their depression or other issues. Some of the children felt like they were alone and no one else knew what they were going through. The children who were studied did not live on or near a military base that offers support. It may not been seen but children are affected by deployments and they need help.
Question: Question 3.
Point of view: There are children that are out there needing help but because there are limits on programs and where they are, many children are not able to get the help that they need.
Gibbs, D., Martin S., Kupper, L., Johnson, R. (2007). Child maltreatment in enlisted soldiers’ families during combat-related deployments. doi: 10.1001/jama.298.5.528.
Thesis: While a parent is deployed to a combat zone the chances of that child getting mistreated is higher than those who’s parents are not in a combat zone.
Annotation: When a parent is deployed the other parent becomes much more stressed than normal. This stress causes the parent to treat the children a little more differently than normal. This happens more when the children’s parent is deployed over those who’s parent is not. The chances of mistreatment for the children increases when the parent is deployed to a combat zone.
Question: Question 2
Point of view: This article shows that there are issues that are going on that may not be able to be see on the outside. Things like stress affect the children even when the children are not the ones that are stressed.
Thesis: All children go through different feelings and hard times while their parents are deployed. Some have a harder time then others.
Annotation: Some parents have issues that are between the two grown ups, but that does not mean that the child is not affected by these issues. When there is a shortage of money or other needs the children can recognize that and it can affect how they act. It can even cause them to cut back on what they are eating or what they buy. The smallest problem that any of the parents have can affect the children even if it is not told to them.
Question: Question 2
Point of view: While going through a deployment there are many issues that are between the parents but when the issue gets to the children it affect their everyday life to where they feel like they cannot live a normal life.
Thesis: While many children are young and may not understand where their parent is going, many do understand that their parent is gone and may not come home.
Annotation: Elementary school students are affected by deployments. They may not be affected the same way that older children are affected but they have issues with deployments as well. People should be on the look out to help support and even take the child’s mind off of the deployment by having parties and other things for them to keep busy.
Question: Question 4.
Point of view: There are a lot of children who are affected by deployments, but not that many people know how to help them.
Thesis: Some children take a deployment much harder than others.
Annotation: When a parent is deployed it can cause a very hard and stressful time for children. Some take it easy and some take it harder. The older the child is, the harder it can be on them. People close to that child should be looking out for their best interests and help them if they see that they need help.
Question: Question 4
Point of view: This video shows that there are children and teens that need help but not many people out there know how to help these children.

Thesis: Deployments affect children in their everyday life.
Annotation: Children go through many things during a deployment and many of these impact their everyday life. Some children are affected in a negative and some in a positive way. Some of these ways are; depression, anxiety, fear, responsibility, and many more. Most parents do not know how to handle what is going on with their children because they have never been in the situation before.
Question: Question 2
Point of view: This article covers many great things about how children are impacted. There are many negative and positive things that a child goes through during a deployment.
